Basement Waterproofing Case Studies: Fixer Upper With A Wet Basement, Oro-Medonte, ON
Challenge
Kyle, a carpenter, is leading the renovations for his sister-in-law’s newly purchased home in Oro-Medonte. She bought the house knowing it was a fixer-upper. However, unbeknownst to them, there was quite a severe water seepage and mould problem hiding behind the finished walls of the basement. This is, unfortunately, a common occurrence in homes bought “as is” without a proper inspection. Kyle called us to look at the problem and made it very clear that the downstairs portion of the home is going to be where the children’s rooms are. He said, ‘it is important that this problem never happens again. I want to ensure the kids are safe!’. Hearing this, Logan knew it was essential to design a system that considered all the potentially harmful problems. They wanted a healthy basement and peace of mind so that the kids would have a safe living space for many years. Logan explained to Kyle and his sister-in-law, Angelina, why the house had these problems and how we could solve them. With what they asked me to accomplish, Logan could confidently design a full perimeter basement waterproofing system. Fixing the whole basement allows the family to rest easy, knowing there will no longer be the threat of mould, rot, mildew, and water. Working hand in hand with Kyle was a pleasure ensuring our system fit into his design plans for a finished, renovated basement.
Solution
The crew came in and prepped the workspace for construction. Next, the floors were broken up approximately 6”-8” away from the wall, and all the rubble was excavated. This allowed us to lay our WaterGuard® pipe system around the entire perimeter of the basement, underneath the concrete slab. Each wall received a WaterGuard® Port for easy access to flush out the system during our recommended yearly service. We then installed the SuperSump® system to get all the water pumped out far away from home. Next, our CleanSpace® was installed along the walls to protect the house from water vapour and seepage. Finally, we installed Trench Drain in front of the garage access to the basement to ensure all water seepage would be collected in our system.
