Log Cabin Settles Five Inches in Norland, ON

Twenty years ago, the Byam’s built a beautiful log home as their retirement home. Over that time, they began noticing severe cracking in interior and exterior walls as well as windows and doors becoming out of square and difficult to operate. Later determined that one section of the home had been built over poorly compacted fill soils and caused settlement of nearly 5 inches. A permanent solution was required to stop the settling foundation and, if possible, restore the home to its original, level position.

After considering several options, Clarke Basement Systems was the contractor of choice due to their high level of professionalism, reputation, and thorough explanation of the solution. Clarke Basement Systems excavated the soil around the foundation walls and installed ten (10) Foundation Supportworks™ Model 288 Push Piers to permanently stabilize the foundation. L-shaped foundation support brackets positioned below and against the footings; steel pier sections were driven approximately 20 feet to competent load-bearing strata. Hydraulic cylinders were then used to lift the foundation nearly 5 inches to a level position, closing cracks throughout the home and bringing the doors and windows back into operation. The homeowners now have peace-of-mind thanks to their permanently stabilized, and they have the added assurance of a 25-year warranty.

Bowing Foundation Wall Threatens Home in Gooderham, Ontario

When you picture a wall, specifically a foundation wall, you get a petty clear picture in your mind. We imagine foundation walls as perfectly straight, and typically made of concrete blocks or poured concrete, but this isn’t always the case. Nature loves to toy with foundations, and expansion and contraction can often lead to cracking and bowing.

A homeowner in Gooderham, Ontario, learned just how much foundation walls could bow. Her home is close to 60 years old and built on a block foundation, but in recent years she has noticed her basement wall bowing more and more.

The customer already had exterior work done on the upper portion of the wall and wanted to have the interior part fixed at the same time. Unsure who to turn to, she reached out to Clarke Basement Systems.

System Design Specialist Robert Langton met with the worried homeowner and explained her options. She was happy to hear we had a solution for her basement, and a date was set to complete the repair.

Foreman Dave Jackson used our CarbonArmor® Wall Repair System to straighten the bowing walls. CarbonArmor® is ten times stronger than steel and is flexible, contouring perfectly to the foundation wall. ArmorLocks® then attach the CarbonArmor® strips to the floor joist, permanently straightening the wall.

The customer is smiling ear to ear now that her basement walls are straight. She knows her home and is stable and safe, and she can continue to do exterior work without any worries.
