Basement Waterproofing Case Studies: Damp Crawl Space Holds Up Basement Reno in Toronto, Ontario
Challenge
Planning a home renovation is an exciting time. Our homes are a reflection of who we are, and a renovation is an extension of our ideas and creativity. While the idea of adding onto or changing our home is thrilling, renos are usually a crazy time. You do everything you can to prevent any headaches, but sometimes there is an issue that just can’t be ignored.
A customer in Toronto, Ontario, was planning on finishing their basement soon. We had previously done work in her basement, but now she wanted to waterproof the dirt-floor crawl space before she continued with her reno.
Fortunately for her, she knew exactly who to call, and System Design Specialist Ron Monk met with her at her home to inspect the crawl space.
Solution
After the inspection, Ron designed a system to encapsulate and waterproof the area. To stop water at the walls, Foreman Dave Jackson encapsulated the crawl space with CleanSpace® Vapour Barrier. CleanSpace® is entirely waterproof and drains any moisture downward to the Drainage Matting. The matting provides a buffer between the dirt floor and the rest of the room. To help the temperature of the entire basement and the floor above, Dave installed SilverGlo® Insulation.
Since groundwater seepage was also a potential issue, a SmartDrain® was installed, catching and draining any water back into the ground. Lastly, to deal with the high humidity levels most Ontario basements have, Ron designed the system to include an Aprilaire® MoistureLoc Dehumidifier.
The customer is ecstatic that the work is done. He is finally confident about using his crawl space for storage and can continue to renovate his basement with the peace of mind knowing the entire area will remain dry.
