Basement Waterproofing Case Studies: Spring Thaw Leads to a Foot of Water in the Basement in Meaford, Ontario

Challenge

An escarpment is a beautiful natural phenomenon. A high peak with a secluded valley below... what else could someone ask for? While many people would love to live in an area like this, you may end up fighting with nature more than someone who lives in the city.

For a customer in Meaford, Ontario, she was losing the battle against nature. Her home is near an escarpment, so water drains right to her house during the spring thaw. She already had a sump and weeping system in place, but with one to three feet of water each spring, it just wasn’t cutting it. Frustrated and fed up with spring flooding, she reached out to Clarke Basement Systems.

Solution

System Design Specialist Robert Langton travelled to the customer’s home and inspected the house. He designed a system that would keep her basement dry year-round and a date was set for our team to install the system.

Foreman Jose Martinez and his team, Installation Specialists Devin Mills & Trevor Bowman, started by installing a full perimeter of WaterGuard®. WaterGuard® sits parallel to the floor and wall joint, trapping any water that seeps through. Next, the team installed a TwinPump® Sump Pump to compliment the previous sump pump and provide enough drainage for the basement. To ensure any water that seeps through the upper portions of the walls is contained and drained, Jose encapsulated the space with CleanSpace® Vapour Barrier. Lastly, for extra security, an IceGuard® Discharge Line was installed for both sumps. IceGuard® has a built-in overflow that prevents backups due to winter freezing.

The customer is thrilled that she no longer has to worry about spring floods. She can enjoy her beautiful view of the escarpment without the concern of what spring will bring.
