Basement Waterproofing Case Studies: Seeping Water Soaks Belongings in Toronto, Ontario, Basement
Challenge
For many people, a basement is a finished living space. For others, it is strictly a storage area. Both are great uses of the space and have their pros and cons, but it is virtually impossible to use a basement in any capacity when water is seeping into the space.
A customer in Toronto, Ontario, learned first-hand the trouble that can be caused by seeping water. They stored a number of belongings in their basement, but water seepage had caused their items to get wet and waterlogged. The basement was unliveable due to the water, and they were becoming concerned that mould would affect the structure and the rest of the home. Wood had already started to rot, so it was a matter of time before the structure would be affected.
Fearing the worst and wanting to bring their basement back to life, the customer reached out to Clarke Basement Systems for a free estimate.
Solution
System Design Specialist Ben Wallis went to the customer’s home to inspect the basement. He worked with the customer to create a plan that worked for him and our Production Department booked a date for Foreman Dave Jackson and his crew to waterproof the basement.
Dave started by installing the ThermalDry™ Wall Membrane to encapsulate the basement. ThermalDry™ works as both a vapour barrier and insulator, guiding water towards the drain and helping the basement to retain heat. To catch the water at the wall and floor joint, a WaterGuard® Drain System was installed. WaterGuard® not only catches water but also directs it to the sump pump.
A SuperSump® Sump Pump was installed to pump water out of the home through an IceGuard® Discharge Line. IceGuard® prevents freezing and backups, keeping the basement dry year-round. To avoid structural issues due to humidity, an Aprilaire® MoistureLoc Dehumidifier was installed, keeping the relative humidity below 55%.
With their battle against groundwater finally over, the customer is thrilled. They can finally use their basement again and can do so with a thorough and tested waterproofing system.
