Sump Pumps Protect Your Home from Water Damage

A wet, leaky or flooded basement or crawl space is never a good experience for anyone. While the clean-up and restoration is a huge effort and expense, you may also be faced with serious water damage to the structure of your home or commercial building and its contents.

Installing a sump pump will prevent a wet basement and eliminate the stress and cost of repairs. Being prepared can save you money, and protect your property and valuables.

How does a sump pump work?

  • Sump pumps are installed in sump pits (located in the lowest part of your basement floor) where
water naturally collects, whether brought there through pipes, drains or the soil around and under the building.
  • Sump pumps pump out water through specially installed pipes to a spot safely away from your basement and foundation.
  • The sump pump turns on automatically as the pit fills with water
  • A one-way valve in the pump prevents the water from flowing back into your basement
  • Most sump pumps are powered by electricity, but should also have a battery powered back-up
system in case of a power failure

Choosing a sump pump

  • Although manual sump pumps are less expensive, automatic pumps protect your home better because they remove excess water automatically – without the need to manually turn on the system.
  • You can also choose between a pedestal sump pump and a submersible one. Submersibles cost more but are hidden, safer for children and are a better option in a basement space that’s used regularly.
  • Make sure the system has sufficient pressure to pump the water out of the pit to its desired
    discharge location.
  • It’s best to select a sump pump with a back-up system and alarm to avoid unfortunate surprises

Selecting a sump pump can be confusing. It’s important to know what’s available and which system will best suit your home’s requirements. Installation also requires experience and skill to avoid problems from using the wrong equipment and/or improper installation. You must also know where sewer, utility and water lines are located.
